To improve the lives of the poor by providing local employment opportunities for at least one hundred days in a financial year to rural adults willing to do unskilled physical work.
Programs like engaging the poor in rural areas, providing employment to agricultural laborers, food security, building durable assets are being implemented under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme [MGNREGS].
To create wage-oriented employment and provide security to the lives of rural people
Not less than one hundred days of unskilled work in a financial year will be provided to each registered family seeking employment
Wages will be paid at least once in a fortnight
Wages for women and men will be paid equally.

Eligibility
Every adult in the family named in the family job card is eligible to apply for unskilled manual work.
If more than five children below six years of age accompany the labourers, a woman shall be appointed to look after those children and the woman shall also be paid the minimum daily wage.
If the worker becomes permanently disabled or dies due to the work, he/she or his/her heirs, as the case may be, shall be entitled to a compensation of Rs. 25,000/- or as may be fixed by the Central Government.
